TTRB Scrimmage 2013-04-18, a set on Flickr.Last night I tried out a different look for my derby photos. I decided to give myself a challenge and shoot a scrimmage only in monochrome. Often with derby (and photography in general) it’s too easy to fall back on using just the color of the subject matter to define the photo and then forget all about the lighting. Part of that has to do with the sheer speed of the event. We often don’t get the luxury of finding the perfect light for a shot. The nice about shooting a scrimmage is I can slow down a bit and try to anticipate the shots. For the photo geeks out there, I shot these photos using a customized sepia tone Picture Style in my Nikon D600. I shot JPEGs only to ensure that I maintained the in-camera processing (RAW files don’t keep any of the camera picture style settings). I did only some minor tweaking in Lightroom afterwards (cropping, rotating, some slight exposure tweaks on a couple of photos, etc.). Otherwise, toning is all in-camera processing.
